dental-plaque

Tartar is also called calculus, it is a form of hardened dental plaque. During the process of tartar formation, bacterial cells in dental plaque are killed and calcified together with calcium phosphate which ultimately forms rough surface. Tartar can cause Gum disease, Cavity, Bad breath and tooth discoloration.

Main causes for tartar formation include:

  • Poor Oral hygiene: If plaque are not removed daily by brushing and flossing, it can harden into Tartar
  • Consumption of carbohydrates and sugary foodstuff
  • Smoking
  • Dry mouth
  • Diabetes

The most effective way to prevent tartar formation is that plaque is removed daily by brushing, flossing and using suitable mouthwash as a routine. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing and only a dental professional can remove it during an oral cleaning.
