Bad breath, also known as Halitosis, is a condition that develops unpleasant smell in breath. Studies demonstrate that 50 percent of adults have had bad breath at some points in their lives.
Bad breath can be a temporary problem or a chronic condition. It has various reasons, 90% of which are oral.
The main sign of bad breath is unpleasant odor in breath. Bad breath odors are different depending on their sources.
Some people worry too much about their breath, even though they have little or no mouth odor, while others have bad breath and don’t know it.
If you want to know whether you have bad breath or not, you can smell your breath by placing your hand over your nose and mouth and breathe. While you smell unpleasant odor, you should find out what is the cause of it.
There are many causes for bad breath, including:
1- Poor oral hygiene: If you aren’t maintaining your oral hygiene, food particles can remain in your mouth, promoting the growth of bacteria especially anaerobe bacteria which produce volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) creating unpleasant odor.
In addition, odor-causing bacteria and food particles can cause bad breath if dentures are not properly cleaned.
2- Dry mouth: Saliva helps moisten and clean the mouth, and when the body does not produce enough saliva, it may lead to bad breath. Salivation naturally is reduced during sleep, which is the main cause for bad breath.
3- Infection: Infectious disease in oral cavity such as dental cavity and periodontal disease are causes for bad breath.
4- Food: Some food such as onion, garlic and coffee can leave an unpleasant odor in mouth.
5- Tobacco products: Smoking can cause bad breath, stain teeth, reduce your ability to taste foods, and irritate your gums.
6- Medical Conditions: Some medical conditions such as a sinus condition, gastric reflux, uncontrolled diabetes, liver or kidney disease, some cancers, blood disorder, Sjogren’s syndrome can cause bad breath.
